Create Fabric That Looks Impossibly Beautiful—and Is Easier Than You Think

Have you ever seen a basket-weave fabric made of interlocking squares and thought, “That is stunning—but there is no way I could make that”?

Maybe you’ve admired entrelac projects from a distance, assuming they required advanced knitting skills or complicated seaming. Maybe you’ve never even heard of Tunisian entrelac and are simply curious what it is. Maybe you’ve been looking for a technique that produces truly showstopping fabric without a pattern you have to follow stitch by stitch.

Here’s what I want you to know: the technique looks intricate, but it’s a rhythmic, meditative process. You will love the way the fabric comes together.

What Tunisian Knit Entrelac Is

Entrelac creates fabric with a woven, basket-weave appearance made of interlocking squares. When worked in Tunisian crochet with stitches running in both directions, the result closely resembles true knitted entrelac—with beautiful drape and dimensional texture. The squares connect as you go, so there is no seaming required. Once you understand the structure, you can scale this technique to blankets, scarves, garments, and home décor.

What You’ll Learn

In this hands-on 3-hour class, we’ll create a small sampler together that shows exactly how entrelac squares build on each other and how to change direction for the characteristic basket-weave look.

We’ll cover:

  • How entrelac squares are built and connected as you go — no seaming, no finishing headaches, just continuous fabric
  • How to change direction — the key to creating that distinctive basket-weave look
  • Working with 2–3 colors — so your sampler showcases the full visual impact of the technique
  • How to scale the structure — so you can take this technique directly into any project you choose

Why This Class Works

Entrelac is one of those techniques that produces fabric so beautiful, people assume it must be difficult. This class pulls back the curtain and shows you the simple, repeating logic underneath. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it—and you will find yourself reaching for this technique again and again.

Who This Class Is For

This class is perfect for you if you are an intermediate crocheter who:

  • Knows how to chain, slip stitch, and single crochet

  • Has some familiarity with Tunisian crochet—though it is helpful, not required

  • Wants to create fabric that is genuinely dimensional and visually stunning

  • Is ready to learn a technique that scales to virtually any project you can imagine

What to Bring

2–3 solid colors of smooth worsted weight yarn. A US size I/9 (5.5mm) Tunisian crochet hook—straight or interchangeable with a cable both work. You will also need locking stitch markers, scissors, and a metal yarn needle.

A full-color handout is included with your registration for a $6.00 materials fee. No homework required.

Fabric Worth Falling in Love With

For over 27 years, I’ve been helping crocheters build skills that last—with teaching that is warm, patient, and clear, because crochet should feel rewarding at every stage. Tunisian entrelac is one of my favorite techniques to teach, because the moment the squares start connecting and that basket-weave fabric takes shape, students light up every single time.

I can’t wait to see your face when it happens.
