Taking Yesterday’s Crochet…
… and bringing it into the Modern World!
Designer Karen Whooley learned to crochet lace at her Italian Grandmother’s knee. But what she learned as a child has now become her number one strength.
In Modern Italian Lace Crochet, Karen brings to you a little bit of her family history that started in the early 20th century, takes the lace that she learned and turns it on its head to become more modern, more vibrant, and much more approachable for every crocheter.
From shawls and accessories to beautiful, wearable garments, each of the 10 projects in Modern Italian Lace Crochet is full of memories. Karen uses ideas and stitches she learned from her Italian heritage but puts them together to become classics that modern crocheters are looking for.

Morcellement is a verb defined as “division into small portions” in the 1933 Oxford Dictionary. As this pattern was originally my 2017 Mystery Shawl Crochet-A-Long and sent out in portions, I thought the name was perfect!
This triangular shawl is worked from the top down starting with simple stitches and as the pattern goes forward, the pattern becomes more lacy and eventually has a 1-row edging. Light and elegant, everyone will love this shawl.

This darling sweater is perfect for that little boy in your life. Fingering weight yarn makes this charming pullover very lightweight – so it’s perfect from fall through spring! Sized from 12 months to 6, the “V”-neckline is flattering on every one of your little guys. Don’t let those stripes scare you; color changes are done while carrying the yarn along the edge so you don’t have extra ends to weave in.

Working in a flat piece then seaming up the back and then cinching up the top, this hat is truly the easiest hat you will ever make. You’ll learn a new stitch that makes the fabric super cushy and warm and because of how the stitches are made, the seam will be invisible to the outside. Pick you favorite solid, tonal, gradient or speckled yarn – the stitch will make the most of every look! This will truly become YOUR Favorite Hat.

“Never say die” is one of the most iconic lines from the classic movie “The Goonies.” Inspired by this adventurous tale, the yarn colors for this shawl pattern capture the spirit of the film.
The name “Never Say Die” and the main color of the shawl pay homage to this memorable phrase, while the design incorporates symbolism from the movie.
The pattern features a basic Granny Ripple stitch, reminiscent of arrows on a treasure map. It is easy to memorize and allows each mini-skein color to shine. Unlike the Goonies’ challenges, this shawl is easy to create and a joy to wear.

One of my bucket list items is to see the Aurora Borealis live. So when I saw the color Aurora from Polka Dot Sheep, I knew I had to create something using that color!
This half-circle shawl looks far more complicated than it actually is. The main body of the shawl is actually done in all double crochets – it’s the color changes (that you don’t have to cut or carry) that give it interest! The shawl ends with a lacy edging just ready to finish off the last of the two colors.
Choose a variegated and a solid in any combination to make his shawl your own. And be sure to share your combination with me!

Ocean Charm is a soothing, sea-inspired, bandit-style cowl that blends texture, lace, and color in a graceful wave of stitches. It begins with the elegant Delta Lace stitch, worked flat in a variegated yarn that mimics the ever-changing ocean surface. After blocking to shape, the piece transitions to working in the round with a tonal yarn, using double crochet and subtle lace for a gentle, rolling texture. A shell stitch edging completes the design with a soft wave — the perfect detail to cap off this breezy coastal project.
