Hook, Line & Italia

Italy has always had a place in my heart that goes deeper than just travel. My nonna learned to crochet in Guamo, a small town outside Lucca, the beautiful, walled city in Tuscany that most tourists never find. I have wanted to bring a group of makers there for longer than I can say.

This trip is that dream finally taking shape. Milan as our home base, Italian yarn culture woven through every day, and if all goes according to plan, a stop in Lucca where this craft runs in my family’s blood.

Nothing is set in stone yet — that’s why I’m asking before I plan. I want to know if you’d come.

What This Trip Could Look Like

Details are still coming together — but here’s the heart of what we’re building.

🏙️ Milan as Home Base: A city built on design, craft, and beauty — the perfect place to make things and wander between.

🧶 Hands-On Crochet Workshops Guided making sessions with local artisans, learning techniques rooted in Italian textile tradition.

🌿 A Stop in Lucca (if the stars align) A personal detour to the Tuscan city where my Nonna first picked up a hook. Small, beautiful, and unforgettable.

🏭 Fiber & Yarn Experiences Mill visits, specialty shops, and a front-row look at where Italian yarn actually comes from.

🍝 Food, Culture & Slow Travel Meals together, iconic landmarks, and the kind of unhurried days that feed your creativity.

👯 A Community of Makers Crocheters — and a few knitters — who love this craft as much as you do. Travel is better with your people.

Final itinerary will be confirmed after interest is gathered. All details subject to change.

Is This Trip For You?

This trip is for the crocheter who has always wanted to travel with their craft — who lights up at a yarn shop in a new city and would happily spend an afternoon making something beautiful in a sun-warmed Italian courtyard.

You don’t need to be an advanced maker. You don’t need to have traveled alone before. You just need to love what your hands can do and be ready to see Italy through the eyes of someone who makes things.

A Little About Your Host

I’m Karen Whooley!

I am a crochet designer, teacher, and the person who will absolutely stop at every yarn shop we pass. I’ve spent years making fingering- and lace-weight yarns approachable for crocheters who thought they couldn’t, teaching with patience and building a community of makers who support each other.

This trip is an extension of everything I love about this craft:

  • the making
  • the learning
  • the connections that happen when you put good people in a beautiful place with hooks in their hands.
