You are not doing it wrong.
Most crocheters find out the hard way. You crochet a soft cotton sweater and then watch it stretch out of shape the first time you wear it, and wonder what you did. You trust a four-inch gauge swatch, then find out later that the edges lied to you when you try on the cardigan. You sit with a project crumpled in your lap under bad light and decide the whole thing looks messy, when the real problem is closer to your lighting than your stitches.
None of that means something is wrong with you. It means nobody told you the fix before you needed it.
I have been designing and teaching crochet for nearly 30 years, and I hear the same questions in class over and over. Gauge. Yarn. Keeping your place in a pattern. What to do when the finished piece does not look the way you pictured it. Some of what I know came from my Nonna, sitting beside me while she moved my hands until the stitch was right. The rest I learned the hard way, more than once, sometimes standing in front of a room full of students.

I have been a crochet designer, author, and instructor for nearly 30 years. In that time I have written patterns and books, taught in person and online, and spent a lot of hours sitting beside crocheters while they worked through something that was not behaving. That part is still my favorite part of the job.
This guide came out of those hours. The same questions come up in class again and again, about gauge, yarn, keeping your place in a pattern, and what to do when the finished piece does not match the picture in your head. I started keeping track. The rest of what is in here I learned the hard way, or from my Nonna, usually by getting it wrong before I got it right.
I care most about helping you skip some of the hard parts I have already been through. When crochet goes smoothly, you enjoy it more, and that is the whole point.
