Tunisian CAL Month 10 – Joining the Squares and the Gusset

Joining the Squares

When joining the squares to make each side of the bag, you will first join the square in 3  strips of three squares for each side, then you will join each of the three strips together,  I find that this makes the points where the seams overlap a whole lot smoother and you have less holes.

You can chose to join the squares in any order you like. You can make either side different if you want as well.

To join the individual squares:

  • Hold 2 squares with wrong sides together.
  • Starting in one corner of the side you want to join, join yarn with a slip stich in the middle stich of the 3 sc group in that corner of both squares.
    • Make sure that you catch only the Back Loop of the square facing you, and the adjacent loop of the square behind it.  This creates a ridge on either side of the join.
  • Slip Stitch in each stich across the sides of the square in the same manner above with the last stich in the middle stich of the 3 sc group in the corner of both squares.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Do these steps for each of the individual squares to create the 3 strips of 3 squares (or 6 strips  if you are doing both sides at once)

To join the Strips:

  • Hold 2 strips with wrong sides together.
  • Starting in one corner of the side you want to join, join yarn with a slip stich in the middle stitch of the 3 sc group in that corner of both strips.
    • Make sure that you catch only the Back Loop of the square facing you, and the adjacent loop of the square behind it.  This creates a ridge on either side of the join.
  • Slip Stitch in each stich across the sides of the square in the same manner above making sure to slip stitch in each stich on either side of  the joins between the individual squares. Work all the way across with the last stich in the middle stich of the 3 sc group in the corner of both squares.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Do these steps for each of the strips to create the 2 squares ( 9 squares in 3 rows of 3 squares)

Edging around each completed side:

  • Join with a single crochet  in center stitch in any corner.
  • Evenly space 55 single crochets on each side, with 3 sc in each corner, join with a slip st in first sc. Total of 232 sc around each side.

Tunisian Gusset

Ch, 8.

Tss across and back for 175 rows.  Fasten off weave in ends.

Edging:

Join yarn in top right corner with sc.  2 more sc in same corner, evenly space 5 sc across top to next corner, 3 sc in next corner, working along sides of rows, evenly space 165 sc down side; 3 sc in next corner, evenly space 5 sc across bottom to next corner, 3 sc in next corner, working along sides of rows, evenly space 165 sc up side; join with sl st in 1st sc.  Fasten off, weave in all ends.
